Superstitions!!??!

History Of Superstitions

Don't believe every superstition!! It might be all in your head! ;)

Halloween is just around the corner and everyone seems to be more interested in the strange and unusual myths of ghosts, witches and superstitions. Well, if you ever wondered why people “knock on wood” and “cross their fingers” for good luck, here is a brief history of the everyday superstitions that people believe in today.

Black Cat- The superstition about black cat’s varies in different cultures. In Great Britain, Ireland and Japan, Black cats are considered a sign of good luck. Gamblers believe that if a black cat crosses them while going to the casino, they should not go because a black cat brings bad luck. The pilgrims associated black cats with the devil and witches. They were even believed to be withes disguised as cats. Anyone who owned a black cat would be punished or killed.

Walking Under a Ladder- Besides the fact that it can be dangerous, it is believed to bring bad luck. A ladder leaning against a wall forms the Holy Trinity. Walking through this formation is disrespectful to God and shows sympathy for the devil.

Knocking on Wood- Basically it’s trying to avoid tempting fate. So when somebody says “I’ve never been in a car accident”  immediately followed by “Knock on wood.” Usually used when we think we jinxed ourselves. Why wood you ask? Well in Great Britain, the Druids who once lived there, worshiped trees. They thought that spirits lived in the trees, and whenever somebody needed good fortune or needed to repel bad luck, they would knock on the wood to ask them to work in their favor.

Spilled Salt- When a person spills salt they immediately have to throw salt over there left shoulder. This is because the Devil will attack from behind and from the left side (evil side). The salt will scare off the devil. The Devil detests salt because it is incorruptible and linked to God.

Step on a crack. In present day we associate this superstition to the phrase “ Step on a crack, break your mother’s back.”  The number of cracks you stepped on were how many bones your mother would break. This superstition actually goes back to the late 19th century when racism was prevalent. The original phrase was “step on a crack, and your mother will turn black”

Penny on the ground. “Find a penny, pick it up. All day long, you’ll have good luck” We are all familiar with this saying, but why is finding a penny good luck? Some people think that finding a penny heads up means good luck. If it is found heads down, than it is bad luck. It is believed that metal was a gift from the gods, so finding a penny therefore is good luck.

She doesn't look that evil :)

The number 13 and  Friday the 13th – It is on of the most common superstitions, it even has a phobia named after it: triskaidekaphobia. Based on the phobia, planes do not have a 13th row and buildings don’t have a 13th floor. A common thought is that at the Last supper Judas was the 13th guest and that Christ was crucified on Friday. Witches were claimed to gather in groups (a coven) of twelve and during such ceremonies, the devil would appear as the thirteenth attendee.

Wishing on a shooting star- The Greeks thought the shooting stars to be human souls falling. Jew and Christians believed they were were fallen angels or demons. In Chile, when you see a shooting star you must pick up a stone while making a wish in order for it to come true.

4 Leaf Clover- The superstition that the finding of a four-leaf clover can bring good luck is so old that its origin is lost in antiquity. One of the oldest legends has it that Eve, upon being ejected from the Garden of Eden, took a four-leaf clover with her. Because the clover was a bit of green from paradise, its presence in one’s own garden came to be looked upon as an omen of good luck.

Crossing your fingers- This is a common hand gesture used to superstitiously wish for good luck. This gesture originated in the 16th century when ghosts and witches were accepted by many people as real and to be the cause of bad luck and illness. Crossing your fingers was a shortcut to making the sign of the cross by touching  the forehead, heart, left shoulder, then right shoulder with you right hand. When crossed by a witch or an evil force, there was not always time, so crossing your fingers would be the fastest way to “protect” yourself.

Horse Shoe Over a Doorway- A horse shoe hanging above a doorway will bring good luck. It is also believed to ward off the devil.

Kissing under Mistletoe- Mistletoe is said to bring love, fertility and marriage. Although mistletoe is considered to be the seed of love, the name is derived from the belief that the plant grew from bird droppings. “Mistel” is the word for dung and “tan” is the word for twig. So, mistletoe actually means “dung-on-a-twig” Bet you didn’t know that!! haha

Breaking a wishbone.- Two people breaking a wishbone is said to lead to good luck for the person with the larger piece. In earlier times it was thought that the person with the larger piece would get married first.

Break A Mirror- It is said that spirits dwell in mirrors, so when a mirror is broken, any harm that is done to the spirit will also happen to that person. Usually 7 years bad luck. The reason it is 7 years is because of the myth that the body renews itself every 7 years.

So this Halloween get yourself a black cat, cross your fingers and wear your best Lucky 13 outfit! ;)

Happy Halloween!

A little history lesson about tattoos

The Art of tattooing has a rich history. Humankind has always tried to enhance their looks. Jewelry, clothing, and other accessories have been a way to enhance one’s appearance. One of the oldest forms of decorating the body was tattooing. Tattooing is one of the oldest forms of body modification.

There are countless purposes and reasons why tattoos are used for. They have been used for symbols of rank, spirituality, religion and bravery. Tattoos were also used as a symbol of punishment, slavery, and being outcast.

The word tattoo is derived from the Polynesian word, ‘tatao’, which literally means to tap or to mark someone. Original form of tattooing was far more brutal then today’s form of tattooing. A sharp pointed comb would be dipped into a black pigment and then moved around the the body.

Tattoos were brought back to America from the South Pacific in the 1700′s and was popularized by sailors. Tattoo shops were usually located near sea ports. Finding these shops were easy for sailors and most tattoos were inspired by life at sea. The beginning of the most traditional of tattoos designs were anchors, mermaids, hearts, women, and crosses.

The photograph, circa 1943, shows L. M. Brown, a sailor, getting tattooed by Owen Jenson.

A photo, circa 1940, of Captain Elvy and his tattoos. His back features a clipper ship, roses, flying fish, eagle, American flags and a banner reading United We Stand.

Traditional tattoos are simple in design using basic color and line without a lot of blending and shading. Only few artists today have mastered the skill of traditional tattoos which have become more popular recently.

Old hand tattooing needles

Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins is one of the most recognized pioneers and considered the father of old-school tattooing. Another great tattoo artist was Gus Wagner. He was the world’s champion hand tattoo artist and tattooed man.

In the 1891 the first electric tattoo machine was invented. This made it easier for artists to add more detail to their tattoos, but many original artists stayed true to the old style of tattooing.

1900′s tattoos grew popular because of the circus. They had sideshow acts including fully tattooed men and women performing circus acts. Tattoos were also very popular with young men going to war. Many of them had patriotic tattoos of flags, eagles and the names of there division and military units.

1960′s Tattoo’s became less taboo for woman and non military men. Both men and women would get peace signs and other designs to demonstrate their belief against the war.

At present, tattoos are not taboo at all. Mom’s and Dad’s have them, teachers, doctors and anyone else who wants to have one. There is not much judgment against anyone getting tattoos, whether you are memorializing a lost loved one or you just like the way it looks. In our society, the great thing about American tattoos is the variety and freedom to get a tattoo of anything you want, wherever you want it, whenever you want.

Interesting Facts:

-Tattoos are rarely done in ink, what is commonly called inks, are actually suspended solid color particles, mostly metal salts and plastics, but not vegetable dyes as commonly believed.

-Until 2006 it was illegal to get a tattoo in Oklahoma.

-Tattoos are considered a minor medical procedure.

-The first recorded tattoo is believed to have been found on a mummified iceman in 3300 BC. He had 58 tattoos, mostly dots and lines.

-As of 2006, 1 in 4 women aged 18 to 50 have at least one tattoo.

-A rooster tattooed on one leg and a pig on the other is said to protect a sailor from drowning. Neither animal can swim.

-Lucky Diamonds Rich of New Zealand is the most tattooed human being in the world. After having covered most parts of his body, he started getting lighter tattoos on darker ones.

-People in many traditions get their children tattooed to protect them from evil spirits and energies.

Lucky 13 visits Ink N Iron

The 8th annual Ink-N-Iron Festival aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California

June 10-12th, 2011.

Just to give you a little idea what what this event is all about let’s explain it out for ya. People were here for the love of Hot Rods-Kustoms, Live music, burlesque, art shows, 50’s fashion, and of course the tattoo show covering three floors inside the ship. 280 of the best tattoo artists in the world were on hand from 30 States and 25 Countries representing all the tattoo styles; where a car show and music become an integral part of the event, mingling with the artistic expressions of the artists at work. Pinups clad in corsets, Classic Cats with Pompadours, Mohawks, full sleeves and back pieces. Not only is the breathtaking view of the gigantic Queen Mary, the beautiful water, and the amazing Long Beach skyline quite a task to take in all at once, but all the fashion statements and lavishly adorned people are quite a spectacle as well. This convention was both a sort of art gallery and community festival. Seven years ago the ship was overtaken with this event, from tattooing to pin striping and tantalizing show goers with tight corsets, the 8th Annual Ink-N-Iron Festival was kick ass!!!   We have included some photos from the event so you can get a view of some of the things that went on while we were there on Saturday.
